# NM Fairgrounds District Board approves predevelopment plan – Plan includes park, pedestrian upgrades, property acquisition

SANTA FE – The State Fairgrounds District Board on Thursday voted unanimously to adopt a $67.8 million predevelopment plan for the property that prioritizes community benefits and the rehabilitation of Albuquerque’s International District.

The predevelopment plan is an important step toward creation of a master plan, an effort launched in July that is expected to be completed in March 2026.

The approved predevelopment plan centers on the development of a 10-acre public park with green spaces integrated throughout the 236-acre parcel, as well as pedestrian-friendly upgrades alongside the boundary of the Fairgrounds. The planned park will include stormwater management, plazas, trails, play areas and restrooms. The park’s exact location is yet to be determined.

The planned improvements are designed to enhance the Fairgrounds and surrounding neighborhoods, while remaining agnostic to moving the State Fair.

“Today’s unanimous vote reflects broad support for redeveloping the State Fairgrounds and revitalizing central Albuquerque,” said **Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham** in a statement. “I look forward to continued community discussion and work on this vitally important project.”

Development is expected to begin in 2026 and be completed by the fall of 2029. The State Fairgrounds District Board approval of the predevelopment plan on Thursday builds on its September vote to allocate $22.35 million for the purchase of a 14-acre parcel on the southwest side of the Fairgrounds. The funds are obligated through the State Fairgrounds District’s bonding authority.

“The State Fairgrounds District Board has taken the first step to transform the southeastern district six into a thriving economic hub,” said Dr. Peter Belletto, president of the District 6 Neighborhood Coalition. “This action will drive public investment job growth and small business development.”

The next meeting of the State Fairgrounds District Board is scheduled for December 11.

Community members are encouraged to visit the District website, [www.fairgroundsdistrict.nm.gov](http://www.fairgroundsdistrict.nm.gov/), which includes an FAQ section and a Resource Library, as well as a community survey that will be open until mid-November.

**The New Mexico Fairgrounds District Board** was created by statute in early 2025 to thoughtfully redesign the Fairgrounds and deliver new community benefits aimed at quickly improving conditions in nearby neighborhoods.
